Preacher: Matthew Burns Series: Life In God: The Nicene Creed Topic: Sermon Scripture: John 15:5–8, Romans 12:1–13
A lot has changed in the past 100 years. It’s actually amazing to think about how much has changed since 1925. Technology, transportation, cultural and moral values, language, warfare, to name a few.
What’s maybe more astounding what hasn’t changed in the last 100 years - People.
We are, 100 years later still more or less the same kinds of people though our verbiage and outfits have changed. We still find ways to take advantage of each other, to avoid responsibility and to wound. In fact you could say that there is a terrible irony about the last 100 years. In an era of so much change, the one thing that we really needed to change and could not was ourselves; our own nature.
Even more amazing is the fact that, tucked in the very heart of the Nicene Creed - and therefore the heart of the Christian faith - is this very observation. For we have a sin problem. And this is why we confess One baptism for the forgiveness of sins. And the most astounding thing about forgiveness, is that it makes possible what was not possible before - new life, new relationships, peace, trust, even being different people.
