What Do You See In The Mirror?

Preacher: John Vriesma Topic: Sermon Scripture: Matthew 15:21–28

Mirrors. We have a love/hate relationship with them. They show us our faults, such as having hair sticking up or a smudge our faces from our breakfast, but they also help us to look good when we head out to work or to school in the morning. Mirrors might suggest we need to lose weight, which hurts when we first look at ourselves, but it might spur us on to better health in the long run. Mirrors tell the truth, for better or worse.

Makes me wonder… if God held up a mirror of faith for us to look at, what would we see? Would you like what you see or would you cringe at the reflection? What would the mirror show about our faith? What would it reveal about our biases towards others? What changes might we want to make? Are you willing to take a risk and look into that mirror?

Jesus at one point seems to direct a metaphorical mirror at his disciples. They are adamantly pushing away a Canaanite woman in Matthew 15, seeing her as a nuisance and not worthy of Jesus’ time. Jesus points the mirror at the disciples allowing them to see their prejudice toward her while witnessing her passionate faith in Jesus as healer. Let’s enter that story as a Canaanite woman seeks Jesus' help with her demon-possessed daughter. What does the mirror show us about her faith… and ours?
