The Great Counter-Mission

Preacher: Matthew Burns Series: Easter-tide Topic: Sermon Scripture: Matthew 28:8–20

This week we return in Easter to where we left off - with the resurrected Jesus meeting, and commissioning, and sending his disciples out into the world with the mission of the news of the Kingdom of God.

But, that raises a question - if this message in the power of Jesus has been going into the world for so long, why is it still so hard to believe? Why isn’t it believed everywhere, even by those who have heard it?

And that is a question that Matthew, even in the first century was a already keen to address. For in the Gospel of Matthew, at the end, Jesus is not the only one to send disciples on a mission; the religious authorities send their disciples on a mission too - a mission to spread the news that Jesus did not rise from the dead.

And still to this day, the truth and the lie go out together.  And that is something that speaks to us. For it has become hard to tell what is real (and therefore what is to be believed).

What hope is there is a world where everything is fake and nobody cares?

The Truth is a Person and he finds us. In Bread & Wine and Worship on Sunday.
